Learning objectives- I will be able to identify three camera shots, three types of editing and two features of mise-en-scene and make links with the genres conventions.
Settings
Camerawork
Editing
Characters/clothing
Sequence of events
Simple picture of surroundings so you pay attention to the voice over
Don't see who the villain is
Long shot of the long road
Events
Landscape-extreme shot
'See you in he'll in 15 mins' goes against conventions
Landscape delicate and peaceful - then someone's arrested
Handcuffs are used to contain someone but he's going against them
Bathroom to wash evidence but leaves handcuffs in sink - not bothered about being caught again- doesn't concern him
Antagonist smile goes against his psychotic behaviour
Characters
Turns head away from camera as he's about to get in car - creates mystery
Villain dressed in black shows mystery and fear
Tone of voice - calm and polite - creepy - controlled, he knows what he's doing
Final victim and villain same height - they have the same authority - police was smaller then villain shows villain has more power
When police officer is being murdered, villain is positioned higher which represents the power he has over officer
In the police station there was no one else there which is a convention of a thriller film
Camerawork
Establishing shot - showed location of murder which is unfamiliar - shows mystery of setting
Close up - emotion make audience feel how they feel
Low angle of police car, shows how character superior and has more power
Target audience - 15+ after watershed as it contains blood
Editing
Voice over mentioned he had killed before
Pace is slow when he's killing the man
Slow pace when he's walking behind policeman, we don't know what he's going to do, make us suspicious - officer doesn't know he's going to attack
Editing/cuts at the beginning of the landscape shots
Feeds reader what he's life is about and what he's going to do
Setting
Rural and deserted place - makes hard for victim to live
Let's audience think of escape cos there isolated - convention
A start fields are quiet intimidating - victims are vulnerable
Doesn't meet humans needs - police station is old fashioned and officer is unaquipted
Everything seems dead and dry - resembles killings
Doesn't communicate - him being trapped their with villains
i thought this lesson helped me alot, as i was learning lots of different conventions from other pupils which i didnt know, this made me analyse another film better than what i had before. 'no country for old men' isnt like any other thriller film i have seen which aswell made me learn that not all thriller films are dark outside which made me have new understandings of what they can consist of.
Rhianna you have some fantastic points here but none of them have been developed into the PEER paragraphs. Have you literally typed up your notes from class? There is NO analysis here or links to thriller conventions / impact on the audience? You need to work on this further. Refer back to the LO to ensure you receive a C plus for this blog.
